R-Type Leo is a 1992 arcade horizontally scrolling shooter developed by Nanao and published by Irem. Breaking away from the core series formula, this spin-off removes the indestructible Force pod in favor of dual “Bit” satellites and introduces simultaneous two-player cooperative play. It offers a more accessible, action-heavy experience compared to the strict memorization-based puzzle design of traditional R-Type games.
How to Play
Pilot your ship through waves of enemies and challenging boss encounters. Since this is an arcade title playable in your browser, the standard controls are 5 to insert a coin and 1 to start. Use the Arrow Keys to move your ship, and Z or X (or Ctrl/Alt) to fire and unleash your homing attack.
Gameplay Tips
- Master the Bits: Your two Bit satellites automatically adjust their firing angle based on your movement. Moving forward causes them to fire backward, while retreating makes them fire forward. Use this to cover your blind spots.
- Unleash the Homing Attack: Instead of a traditional charge shot, your power meter fills automatically over time. When full, press the fire button to send your Bits flying forward in a devastating homing attack.
- Adapt Your Arsenal: Power-ups cycle through colors when dropped. Red grants the Ripple Laser, Blue equips the Reflective Laser, and Green gives you the Homing Laser. Wait for the color that best suits the upcoming terrain.
