Developed by Beyond Games and published by Psygnosis in 1997, Professional Underground League of Pain is a brutal, futuristic sports game for the PlayStation. Combining elements of basketball, ice hockey, and bare-knuckle fighting, this sci-fi title strips away referees and penalties in favor of high-speed action and violence. You lead one of 16 international teams in a chaotic arena where the ultimate goal is to score points with a plasma ball while physically dismantling the opposition.
How to Play
The objective is to throw a charged plasma ball into a suspended hoop. Before scoring, you must charge the ball by carrying it through the charger located in your opponent’s end of the court. Be careful: scoring with a ball charged to your opponent’s color awards them the points. The game is played using standard PlayStation emulator controls. Move your players with the Arrow Keys (D-pad), use X (Cross button) to pass or switch players, and press Z (Square) or S (Triangle) to shoot the ball or unleash attacks on opponents. Enter acts as Start to pause the game.
Tips
- Always keep track of the plasma ball’s charge color. If an opponent drops a ball charged to your color, you can steal it and immediately score without having to visit their charger.
- Use the diverse camera angles to your advantage; switching to a wider or overhead view can help you anticipate enemy tackles and spot open teammates for a quick pass.
- Don’t neglect the physical combatโtaking down a defender before they can intercept your ball carrier is often more effective than trying to outrun them.
