Developed by Bullfrog Productions and brought to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, Populous is widely recognized as the founding title of the god game genre. In this strategic classic, you take on the role of a deity tasked with guiding your followers to prosperity while destroying the worshippers of an opposing god. The SNES version successfully adapts the deep, complex gameplay of the computer original to a console gamepad, offering a unique and engaging divine simulation.
How to Play
In Populous, you do not control your followers directly; instead, you shape the environment around them. Your primary action is terraformingโusing your divine power to raise or lower land to create flat plains. Flat land allows your followers to build larger settlements, which in turn increases their population and generates more “mana” (divine energy) for you. With enough mana, you can unleash devastating miracles upon your enemies, such as swamps, earthquakes, and volcanoes. Use the D-pad to scroll the isometric map and move your cursor, and the A button to manipulate the terrain and select miracles from the interface.
Tips
- Prioritize Flat Land: In the early game, focus entirely on flattening land around your followers. Large castles generate mana much faster than small huts.
- Unleash the Knight: Creating a Knight is a costly miracle, but it transforms your strongest follower into an unstoppable force that will autonomously roam the map, burning enemy settlements and slaying rival worshippers.
- Use the Papal Magnet: Place the Papal Magnet strategically to direct your followers’ expansion or gather them together for a massive, coordinated migration to better territory.
