Game description:

Over Horizon is a standout 1991 horizontal shoot ’em up developed by Hot-B for the NES. Unlike many other space shooters on the console, it introduces a unique mechanic that lets you fire both forwards and backwards to deal with flanking enemies. Originally released only in Japan and Europe, it has earned a reputation for its vibrant graphics, clever level design, and a rare weapon customization system that lets you tweak your loadout.

How to Play

Your objective is to pilot your ship through diverse alien landscapes, defeating enemy formations and massive bosses. The game allows you to adjust your ship’s firing direction to handle threats from behind. In your browser, use the Arrow Keys to move. Press Z (A button) to fire your weapon, and X (B button) to change your firing direction. Press Enter for Start and Shift for Select.

Tips

  • Customise your weapons: Take advantage of the game’s Edit mode on the title screen to adjust the properties of your lasers, homing missiles, and bombs.
  • Use your options defensively: Your satellite options can absorb standard enemy bullets. Position them strategically around your ship to shield yourself in tight spots.
  • Anticipate attacks from behind: Enemies will frequently ambush you from the left side of the screen. Swap your firing direction early to clear them out before they box you in.
