Ninja Golf on the Atari 7800 (1990) by BlueSky Software is an absurd, brilliant mashup of sports and beat ’em up action. You tee off on a nine-hole course, but instead of walking peacefully to your ball, you must sprint the length of the fairway as a ninja, battling rival ninjas, giant frogs, and mutant gophers along the way. Every hole culminates in a boss fight against a fire-breathing dragon before you can finally putt.
How to play
You alternate between golf swings and side-scrolling combat. During the golf phase, time your button press to set power and direction. During the action phase, fight your way to where the ball landed. Use the arrow keys (â/â/â/â) to aim your shot or move your ninja. Press X or Z to attack (shurikens and kicks), swing your club, and putt. Press Enter to pause and Shift to select.
Tips
- Your shurikens are limited, so rely on your kicks for standard enemies and save your projectiles for tougher foes and the dragon bosses.
- Avoid hazards like water and sand traps during your golf swing; not only do they cost you strokes, but you’ll have to fight your way out of them against tougher enemies like sharks and snakes.
