NFL Blitz is an over-the-top arcade football game released by Midway in 1997, designed by Mark Turmell and Sal Divita â the same team behind NBA Jam â and built on that game’s philosophy of stripping a real sport down to its most exciting moments. Played 7-on-7 with exaggerated, muscle-bound players and the full NFL license, it swaps realistic simulation for fast, arcade-style chaos, and went on to win Electronic Gaming Monthly’s Arcade Game of the Year award in 1997.
How to play
Move your player with the arrow keys. The cabinet’s three action buttons â Z, X, and A in the browser â cover passing to a receiver, the signature Turbo boost that adds speed, jump height, and hit power, and jumping, diving, or tackling; press Enter to start. Blitz keeps the goal of real football â outscore your opponent by driving downfield for touchdowns â but rewrites the rulebook: first downs need 30 yards instead of 10, and most fouls go uncalled, including late hits after the whistle, which announcer Tim Kitzrow gleefully calls out without ever stopping play.
Tips
- Turbo isn’t unlimited â save it for breaking a tackle, finishing a long run, or laying a hit, rather than holding it down constantly.
- Since first downs take 30 yards, plan passing routes further downfield than real-football instinct suggests; short dump-offs won’t move the chains as easily as they would in the real NFL.
- There’s no penalty for hitting the ball carrier after the play ends, so keep pursuing and hitting through the whistle instead of pulling up.
