Nettou Toushinden is a 1996 fighting game developed by Takara for the Game Boy. As part of Takara’s famous “Nettou” series, it serves as a remarkable 8-bit demake of the hit PlayStation weapons-based fighter, Battle Arena Toshinden. The game translates the original 3D combat to a 2D format, transforming the familiar cast of characters into super-deformed “chibi” sprites while retaining their signature weapons, special moves, and combos.
How to Play
Your objective is to defeat a series of opponents in one-on-one combat to win the tournament. Deplete your opponent’s health bar before the timer runs out by combining standard attacks with your character’s unique special moves.
- Movement: Use the Arrow Keys (D-pad) to move, jump, or crouch. Hold the directional key away from your opponent to block incoming attacks.
- Weapon Attack: Press the Z key (A button). Tap the key for a light weapon strike, or hold it down slightly longer for a heavy attack.
- Kick: Press the X key (B button). Tap for a light kick, or hold it down for a heavy kick.
- Start/Pause: Press the Enter key.
Tips
- Use Heavy Attacks Wisely: Because heavy attacks are performed by holding the attack button, they take slightly longer to execute. Rely on light attacks for quick jabs and use heavy attacks when your opponent is left wide open.
- Desperation Moves: Just like the arcade and console originals, when your character’s health drops very low and begins flashing, you can input character-specific commands to unleash a high-damage desperation attack to turn the match around.
