Developed by Konami and published in North America under their Ultra Games label, Nemesis brings the classic horizontal shoot-’em-up action of the Gradius series to the Game Boy in 1990. Players pilot the Vic Viper through five challenging stages, battling alien forces and collecting power-ups to upgrade the ship’s arsenal with missiles, lasers, and the iconic options. Although it shares its name with the European arcade release of the original game, this handheld entry features unique level designs and elements remixed from the first two Gradius titles.
How to Play
Your objective is to survive the scrolling stages, defeat the boss at the end of each level, and save the planet Nemesis from the Bacterion Empire. Use the arrow keys to maneuver the Vic Viper. Press Z to fire your weapons, and press X to activate the currently highlighted upgrade on the power meter at the bottom of the screen. Press Enter to pause the game.
Tips
- Prioritize acquiring the Speed Up and Option upgrades early to significantly improve your survivability and firepower.
- The power-up meter cycles continuously as you collect capsules; if you miss your intended upgrade, you will need to collect more capsules to loop back around to it.
- When facing the recurring core bosses, concentrate your fire on the barriers protecting their vulnerable center while carefully dodging the spread of lasers.
