Game description:

Mother is the 1989 Famicom role-playing game that started Shigesato Itoi’s Mother series, developed by Ape Inc. and HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo in Japan. It follows Ninten, a boy who discovers he has inherited psychic (PSI) powers, as a string of poltergeist-like disturbances in his hometown leads him to uncover a decades-old connection between his great-grandfather George and an alien named Giegue who is now leading an invasion of Earth. Unlike most console RPGs of its era, Mother trades castles and dungeons for a contemporary small-town America setting, pairing turn-based battles with everyday touches like calling home from a payphone to save.

How to Play

Ninten explores towns and countryside from an overhead view, fighting monsters in turn-based random encounters as he levels up and learns PSI abilities. There’s no save menu โ€” progress is saved by calling home from public telephones scattered around each town, a mechanic that became a series trademark.

Controls (mapped to keyboard in the browser):

  • Arrow Keys โ€“ move
  • Z โ€“ confirm / talk / attack
  • X โ€“ cancel
  • Enter โ€“ Start (menu / pause)
  • Shift โ€“ Select

Tips

  • Call home from a telephone whenever you find one. Mother has no autosave, so skipping them risks losing real progress.
  • Recruit Ana, Loid, and Teddy as you meet them. PSI power, weapons, and raw physical attack cover different gaps in Ninten’s own abilities, so a full party handles fights far better than Ninten alone.
