Mortal Kombat 4 is the franchise’s first transition to 3D graphics, released as a fighting game for the Nintendo 64 in 1997 by Midway. While the fighters are modeled as fully polygonal characters, the action remains largely on a 2D plane, preserving the fast-paced, combo-heavy combat the series is known for. This entry introduces the ability to draw character-specific weapons during a match and pick up interactive stage objects, adding new strategic layers to the familiar violent tournament.
How to play
The objective is to deplete your opponent’s health bar across two rounds and finish them off with a signature Fatality. Combat uses the N64’s Analog Stick or D-pad for movement, plus the A, B, C-buttons, R, L, and Z for punches, kicks, running, and blocking, which are mapped to your arrow keys and nearby letter keys in the browser.
Tips
- Weapon management: You can draw a character-specific weapon for extended reach and unique attacks. However, taking a hit will cause you to drop it, allowing your opponent to pick it up and use it against you.
- Use the environment: Many stages feature scattered objects like rocks or severed heads on the floor. You can pick these up and hurl them at your opponent for a quick, high-damage attack.
- Maximum Damage limit: To prevent infinite combos, the game automatically breaks any sequence that exceeds a set damage threshold. Focus on efficient, reliable strings rather than endlessly long combos.
