Originally an Atari arcade hit, Millipede is a fast-paced fixed shooter ported to the NES by HAL America in 1988. As the sequel to Centipede, it introduces a wider variety of insect enemies, explosive DDT bombs, and a relentless difficulty curve. You pilot a small ship at the bottom of the screen, tasked with defending your mushroom garden from the winding, descending millipede and its swarm of insect allies.
How to Play
Your objective is to destroy all segments of the millipede before it overwhelms you, while simultaneously dodging spiders, earwigs, mosquitoes, and bees. Use the D-pad (mapped to your keyboard’s arrow keys) to maneuver quickly, and press A or B (Z or X on your keyboard) to fire. Holding the button allows for continuous rapid fire.
Tips
- Target the DDT bombs: Shooting the chemical bombs scattered in the garden creates a toxic cloud that instantly destroys any insects caught inside, earning you massive points and clearing dense waves.
- Clear the middle: Shoot away mushrooms in the center of the playfield to create clear vertical firing lanes, giving you more time to hit the millipede as it winds downward.
