Might and Magic II: Gates to Another World is a first-person, tile-based RPG developed and published by New World Computing, originally released in 1988. The Sega Genesis version brings this sprawling classic to console. You build a party of up to six adventurers and guide them across the world of CRON — an enormous grid of outdoor regions, dungeons, and towns — uncovering the conspiracy behind Sheltem, an alien terraformer bent on destroying the world’s inhabitants.
How to play
All movement is tile-by-tile in a first-person view. Everything else — shopping, resting, levelling up, casting spells, managing equipment — goes through menus. Combat is turn-based: each party member acts in order, choosing to attack, cast, use an item, or attempt to flee. Encounters can involve large groups of enemies, so spell economy matters from the mid-game onward.
Keyboard controls (Genesis mapping):
- Arrow keys — move / navigate menus
- S (A button) — confirm / primary action
- X (B button) — cancel / back
- Z (C button) — secondary action
- Enter — Start (open main menu)
- Shift — Mode button
- Mouse — in-game menu navigation
Tips
- Build a balanced party from the start. At minimum, bring one Cleric for healing and one Sorcerer for area damage — an all-fighter group runs dry once enemy spellcasters appear in strength.
- The in-game calendar is not decoration. Certain quests, events, and areas are gated to specific dates in the game year. Note the date whenever an NPC mentions a time condition.
- Use save states freely. CRON is vast, resurrection at temples costs gold you may not have, and some traps can knock out an unprepared party in a single round.
