Mat Hoffman’s Pro BMX is a 2001 extreme sports game developed by Shaba Games and published by Activision under its new Activision O2 label, built on a tweaked version of the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater engine. Named for the professional vert rider “The Condor,” it puts you on a bike instead of a skateboard, chaining together grinds, flips, and grabs across street, vert, and dirt courses with a roster of real BMX pros including Mat Hoffman, Dennis McCoy, and Kevin Robinson.
How to Play
Career mode sends you through two-minute runs of each course, chasing five magazine-cover objectives per level — hitting score targets, spelling out “T-R-I-C-K,” or finding hidden covers — to unlock new riders and bikes. Steer with the D-pad, mapped to the Arrow Keys in the browser. Press Cross (Z) to bunnyhop and get airborne, and Triangle (S) near a rail or lip to grind or stall. Once in the air, hold a direction on the D-pad and press Square (A) for a quick trick or Circle (X) for a longer one; chaining tricks without bailing fills your special meter for higher-scoring signature moves.
Tips
- Landing tricks back-to-back without touching ground keeps your combo — and your special meter — building, so link a grind into an air trick rather than resetting after every jump.
- Beyond Career mode, Free Ride lets you explore each course without a timer, which is the easiest way to learn a level’s rails and gaps before attempting objectives under pressure.
- The Park Editor lets you place your own ramps, rails, and gaps, so if a course’s layout isn’t clicking, you can build one suited to the tricks you already know.
