Released in 1993 by MicroProse, Master of Orion is the landmark turn-based strategy game for DOS that helped define the “4X” genre (explore, expand, exploit, exterminate). You take control of one of ten unique races, each with distinct advantages, and attempt to dominate the galaxy through colonization, technological research, diplomacy, and tactical space combat.

How to play

Your objective is to become the supreme ruler of the galaxy, either by conquering all rival civilizations or by winning a peaceful election at the Galactic Council. The game is entirely controlled with the mouse, which is used to navigate the galactic map, manage planetary budgets via sliders, design ships, and direct fleets. Tips

Scout aggressively: Send out cheap scout ships early to locate habitable planets and make contact with other races before they box you in.
Balance your sliders: Planetary production is handled by allocating sliders. Early on, focus on ecology to boost population growth, then shift to industry and research.
Don’t neglect diplomacy: Trade agreements provide a steady income over time, and maintaining good relations can keep powerful neighbors off your back while you build your fleet.
