Released for DOS in 1990 by Lucasfilm Games, Loom is a beloved graphic adventure that broke from genre conventions. Instead of collecting items in an inventory or worrying about dying, you play as Bobbin Threadbare, a young Weaver who interacts with a beautiful fantasy world entirely through music.
How to play
In Loom, puzzles are solved by learning and playing four-note musical “drafts” on your magical distaff. As you explore the world and listen to the environment, you will discover new melodies that can open doors, heal characters, or transform objects. Since this is a DOS game running in the browser, you can use your mouse to interact with the environment and select notes on the distaff. For a fullscreen experience, press Right Alt + Enter.
Tips
- Take real notes: Every action or spell in the world produces a specific sequence of musical notes. Keep a physical notepad handy to record these drafts as you encounter them.
- Reverse your spells: Remember that many drafts can be cast in reverse by playing their notes backward, which will undo the effect of the original spell.
