Kyukyoku Tiger, widely known outside Japan as Twin Cobra, is a relentless vertical-scrolling shoot ’em up developed by Toaplan and released for arcades in 1987. Piloting a heavily armed attack helicopter, you must blast through an endless barrage of tanks, turrets, and aircraft. The game is renowned for its steep difficulty, sprawling stages, and the introduction of a devastating bomb mechanic that clears the screen of enemies and bullets in a pinch.
How to Play
Your objective is to survive the military onslaught and destroy the boss at the end of each stage. Use the arrow keys to move your helicopter in eight directions. Press Z to fire your primary weapon and X to deploy a powerful screen-clearing bomb. Collecting colored power-ups dropped by specific enemies will change your weapon type or increase its firepower.
Tips for Kyukyoku Tiger
- Your bomb (X) has a slight delay before it detonates. Use it preemptively when you see you are about to be trapped by enemy fire, not right as you are hit.
- Pay attention to the color-changing power-up icons. Timing your pickup to match your preferred weapon (such as the wide-spread green laser or the high-damage red shot) is critical for crowd control.
- Don’t linger at the bottom of the screen. Moving forward slightly gives you more reaction time and allows you to destroy turrets and tanks before they can fire.
