Kirby’s Adventure is a 1993 NES platformer from HAL Laboratory and one of the most technically impressive games on the console. It introduced Kirby’s defining mechanic: inhale an enemy and absorb its power, giving you access to more than twenty copy abilities — Fire, Ice, Cutter, Sword, Beam, and many more — across seven worlds.
How to Play
Use the arrow keys to move. Press Z (B button) to inhale: hold it to draw enemies toward you, then release to spit a star projectile — or keep holding until Kirby swallows to steal the enemy’s copy ability. Once you have a power, press Z again to activate it. Press X (A button) to jump; tap X a second time in the air to puff up and float indefinitely. Press Shift to drop your current copy ability, and Enter to pause.
Tips
- Sword and Cutter are versatile, long-range abilities that work well against most bosses — worth holding onto through a world if you find them.
- If pressing Z after swallowing does nothing, that enemy had no copy ability. Next time, spit the star projectile for a free ranged attack instead.
- Floating is unlimited — you can hover over virtually any gap, making the game very forgiving for newcomers despite its seven-world length.
