Karateka is the classic cinematic martial arts action game created by Jordan Mechner, presented here in its Atari 7800 port. Players guide a heroic martial artist through a mountain fortress to rescue Princess Mariko from the evil warlord Akuma. The game is celebrated for its fluid, rotoscoped animation and its punishing but rewarding one-on-one combat.
How to play
Navigate the fortress by moving forward, but be prepared to stop and engage in combat when a guard approaches. Use the arrow keys to move and the Z and X keys to execute punches, kicks, and to toggle your fighting stance. Remember that taking a hit while in your running stance will result in instant death, so switch to your fighting stance as soon as danger appears.
Tips
- Bow before fighting: It is highly recommended to bow (press down) before engaging a guard. Failing to do so can make the enemy more aggressive.
- Manage your distance: Use quick kicks to keep enemies at bay, and carefully back away if you are overwhelmed. Your health, indicated by the arrows at the bottom of the screen, regenerates slowly over time.
- Beware the eagle: Akuma’s trained eagle will occasionally attack from above. Time your high punches or kicks to fend it off before it damages you.
