Developed by Nintendo and later ported to the Atari 7800, Donkey Kong is the defining 1981 action platformer that introduced the world to Mario and his towering simian rival. You play as the heroic carpenter navigating a series of treacherous construction sites to rescue Pauline from the giant ape’s clutches.
How to Play
Your objective is to reach the top of each screen by climbing ladders and avoiding hazards like rolling barrels, springs, and fireballs. The controls are mapped to your keyboard: use the Arrow Keys to move and climb, and press Z or X to jump. You can pause the action with Enter.
Tips
- Grab the hammer: Smashing barrels with the hammer earns you bonus points, but remember that you cannot climb ladders while holding it.
- Watch the ladders: Barrels can unexpectedly roll down broken or complete ladders. Don’t linger directly underneath one if Donkey Kong is tossing barrels above you.
- Steer while jumping: You can slightly adjust your momentum in mid-air, which is crucial for clearing multiple barrels or landing safely on moving platforms.
