Game description:

Karate Champ is a foundational 1984 arcade fighting game developed by Data East that helped establish the entire 1-on-1 fighting genre. This is the “VS Version” (Player vs Player edition), which introduced competitive two-player matches to the original’s single-player tournament format. Players compete in a martial arts point-sparring match, aiming to land clean hits to score half points or full points and win the round.

How to play

The objective is to defeat your opponent by scoring two full points before the timer runs out. Points are awarded for landing clean, unblocked strikes. The original arcade cabinet used a unique twin-stick setup with no buttons, where pushing combinations of directions on both sticks executed different moves. In the browser emulator, use Shift to insert a coin and Enter to start. Use the Arrow Keys to move, and your main action buttons (typically Z, X, and C) to attack and block.

Tips

  • Distance is critical; many attacks have very specific ranges and will miss entirely if you are too close or too far from your opponent.
  • Learn your defensive options. Holding away from your opponent allows you to evade or block incoming attacks, opening them up for a counter-strike.
