Game description:

Jump Bug is a 1981 arcade platformer developed by Alpha Denshi for Hoei/Coreland, distributed by Rock-Ola in North America and by Sega in Japan and Europe. You control a permanently bouncing Volkswagen Beetle-style car as it bounds through eight themed scenes — city streets, mountains, a pyramid, and underwater stretches — shooting enemies and collecting treasure along the way. Released on hardware derived from Namco’s Galaxian board, it was one of the earliest platform games to combine smooth horizontal and vertical scrolling with a simple parallax effect, where the starry sky stays fixed and clouds drift slowly behind the scrolling scenery. This version is a bootleg release of the original board, playable here through emulation.

How to Play

The objective is to bounce your car through each scene, shooting down enemies and grabbing money and jewels for points. Arcade controls in the browser map the joystick to the arrow keys — up and down control the height of your jump and how fast you fall, while left and right move the car — with the fire button on Z. Insert a virtual coin with Shift and press Enter to start. In the pyramid scene, the car can move and jump in any direction, including backward.

Tips

  • Use the up/down controls to fine-tune your jump height mid-air — short hops keep you safer over flat ground, while a full jump is needed to clear taller obstacles or enemies.
  • Watch the clouds in the background: they move independently of the scrolling ground, which can throw off your timing if you judge distance by them instead of the terrain.
  • The pyramid stage is the one place you can reverse direction freely — use that to dodge enemies coming from behind instead of jumping blind.
