Hyper Sports Special Japan (released in 1988 and also known internationally as ’88 Games or Konami ’88) is a classic arcade sports game developed by Konami. As the third entry in the acclaimed Track & Field series, it challenges players to compete in Olympic-style events such as the 100m dash, long jump, javelin throw, archery, and skeet shooting. The game retains the iconic button-mashing gameplay of its predecessors while introducing upgraded graphics and new events to master.
How to Play
Your objective is to qualify in each event by beating a minimum time or score to advance. In the browser, press Shift to insert a coin and Enter to start. Use the arrow keys for direction when needed, and alternate pressing Z and X as quickly as possible to build speed for running events. The C key is typically used as the action button to jump or throw at the precise angle required.
Tips
- Angle is everything: In events like the Long Jump and Javelin, building maximum speed is only half the battle. Aim for an angle of around 42 to 45 degrees for the optimal trajectory.
- Pacing in the dash: For running events, maintain a steady, rapid rhythm on the run buttons rather than erratic mashing, which can cause your character’s speed to drop.
- Skeet shooting timing: Focus on the target areas and anticipate the clay pigeons’ paths; you do not need to mash the buttons here, just precise timing on the action buttons.
