Game description:

Hexen is a dark fantasy first-person shooter released for the Nintendo 64 in 1997. Expanding on its predecessor, Heretic, the game lets you choose between three distinct character classes: the melee-focused Fighter, the versatile Cleric, and the spell-casting Mage. Instead of traditional linear levels, you navigate a complex hub system where puzzle-solving requires traveling back and forth across interconnected maps to find keys and artifacts.

How to Play

Your objective is to battle your way through the realms of Chronos to defeat the evil Serpent Rider, Korax. The game uses standard Nintendo 64 controls (Analog Stick/D-pad for movement, A/B for interactions, Z for attacking, and L/R/C-buttons for strafing, looking, and item management). In the browser, these are mapped to your keyboard (typically arrow keys, Z/X for main buttons, and WASD/IJKL for C-buttons) or a connected USB gamepad.

Tips

  • Pick your class wisely: The Fighter is devastating up close but struggles at a distance, the Mage is fragile but commands powerful ranged magic, and the Cleric provides a balanced mix of both.
  • Pay attention to messages: When you flip a switch, an on-screen message will often hint at what has opened in another level within the hub.
  • Experiment with Flechettes: This throwable item behaves completely differently depending on your classโ€”acting as a poison grenade for the Fighter, a localized poison cloud for the Cleric, and a timed explosive for the Mage.
