Hellfire is a classic horizontal shoot ’em up released for the Sega Genesis in 1990. Developed by Toaplan, this sci-fi arcade port challenges players to pilot the CNCS1 spacecraft through intense, alien-infested levels. It is renowned for its strategic weapon system and challenging gameplay, requiring quick thinking to survive relentless enemy formations.
How to Play
The objective is to navigate your ship through each stage and destroy the boss at the end. The defining feature of Hellfire is its directional weapon system. Instead of picking up different types of projectiles, you switch between four firing directions: forward, backward, vertical (up and down), and diagonal. You must constantly cycle through these angles to hit targets spawning from all sides.
Controls: Use the D-pad to move your ship. Press A or C to fire, and press B to change your firing direction. In the web emulator, movement is mapped to your arrow keys, while you use Z, X, or C to shoot and cycle your weapons (with Enter for Start).
Tips
- Anticipate spawns: Because you cannot shoot in every direction simultaneously, learning where enemies appear is crucial so you can select the correct firing angle in advance.
- Exploit the terrain: In tight corridors, vertical and diagonal shots are essential for safely eliminating turrets and enemies positioned behind walls.
- Play defensively: Collecting power-ups increases your ship’s speed and damage. Your ship is vulnerable when underpowered, so prioritise survival over risky kills to maintain your upgrades.
