Hangly Man Set 3 is a 1981 arcade maze game produced by the Japanese company Nittoh — a bootleg hack of Pac-Man, with the name widely believed to be an “Engrish” mistranslation of “Hungry Man.” Nittoh reworked the boards rather than copying them outright: stages alternate between an altered version of the familiar Pac-Man maze and a much sparser open board that strips away most of the walls, leaving only the ghost house, the outer boundary, and pills laid out in simple straight rows and columns. Namco pursued legal action over the bootleg, which is part of why it only ever existed in arcades and was never officially ported to home systems.
How to Play
Guide Hangly Man around each board eating every pill while four ghosts hunt him down; grab a power pill to briefly turn the tables and eat the ghosts for bonus points. As in the original Pac-Man, there’s no attack button — it’s all about movement and timing:
- Move: Arrow keys (up/down/left/right)
One quirk to watch for on the maze-style boards: eating a power pill can occasionally make the maze walls flicker invisible for a moment, even though they’re still solid.
Tips
- Save power pills for when multiple ghosts are closing in at once rather than using them on the first one you see — the bonus for eating several ghosts in a row adds up fast.
- On the maze boards, the side tunnels let you loop away from a ghost that’s right behind you, since they have to follow the same slow route through.
- The open, wall-free boards remove the maze structure ghosts normally get funneled through, so plan your route further ahead — there’s nothing to block their path to you.
