GunForce II (released in Japan as Geo Storm) is a 1994 side-scrolling run-and-gun shooter developed and published by Irem for arcades, and the sequel to 1991’s GunForce: Battle Fire Engulfed Terror Island. Playing as soldiers Max and Lei, you fight through waves of enemy troops and aliens while dual-wielding two guns that fire simultaneously at different angles. It was Irem’s final arcade release, and its mix of dual-gun gunplay, rideable vehicles, and screen-filling mech bosses is often cited as a spiritual predecessor to SNK’s Metal Slug series.
How to Play
The objective is to shoot your way through each stage, rescuing POWs and collecting medals along the way, before facing a massive mechanized boss. Arcade controls in the browser map the joystick to the arrow keys, with the main shot on the Z key and jump (also used to hop into vehicles) on the X key. Insert virtual coins with Shift and press Enter to start. Picking up a special weapon like a laser or flamethrower replaces one of your two guns rather than both, so you keep your standard blaster firing at its own angle alongside whatever you’ve collected.
Tips
- Since your two guns fire at different angles, pair your standard blaster with a special pickup that covers a different arc rather than picking up the same weapon type twice â together they cover far more of the screen.
- Eleven different vehicles, including motorcycles and attack helicopters, are scattered through the stages. Jump into one whenever you can; riding through a section takes far less damage than crossing it on foot.
- Rescuing POWs along the way adds to your score, so it’s worth a small detour when one is in sight rather than rushing straight past.
