Game description:

Gradius III is a classic side-scrolling shoot ’em up released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990. While the original SNES port was legendary for its intense difficulty and hardware-taxing slowdowns, this version features Vitor Vilela’s remarkable SA-1 enhancement patch. By harnessing the power of the SA-1 coprocessor chip, this version completely eliminates the infamous lag, allowing the game to run smoothly even during the most chaotic bullet-hell sections. Players must pilot the Vic Viper through challenging alien environments, upgrading their ship’s weapons on the fly to survive.

How to Play

Your objective is to navigate the Vic Viper through enemy territory and defeat the Bacterion Empire. Collect power-up capsules left behind by red enemies to advance your weapon meter at the bottom of the screen, and activate your chosen upgrade when needed.

  • D-Pad / Arrow Keys: Move the Vic Viper
  • B Button / Z Key: Shoot weapons
  • A Button / X Key: Activate currently highlighted power-up
  • Start / Enter: Pause the game
  • Select / Shift: Adjust the speed of your ship (if applicable)

Tips for Survival

  • Prioritize Speed and Options: Your first upgrades should generally be a Speed Up and an Option (a pod that follows you and mimics your attacks) to drastically improve your survivability and damage output.
  • Use the Shield Wisely: The shield or force field is essential for surviving the later, more crowded stages. Refresh it whenever it gets completely depleted.
  • Beware the Speed of the SA-1: If you are used to the original SNES version, be warned that the lack of slowdown makes the game significantly faster and harder. Your reaction times will be tested!
