Game description:

Galaga: Demons of Death is a definitive 1988 port of Namco’s iconic arcade fixed shooter for the NES. Players pilot a lone starfighter against relentless waves of insect-like alien armadas that fly in intricate formations before dive-bombing your ship. As a pioneering title in the shoot ’em up genre, it builds on the foundation of its predecessor, Galaxian, with faster gameplay, bonus stages, and a memorable risk-reward mechanic involving captured ships.

How to Play

The objective is to destroy all enemy forces in each stage while dodging their attacks and projectiles. Use the keyboard’s Arrow Keys for left and right movement, and the Z or X keys to fire. Press Enter to start or pause the game. You must clear all enemies to advance to the next wave, including the non-lethal “Challenging Stages” where you can earn bonus points for accuracy.

Tips

  • The Dual Fighter: When a Boss Galaga (the green aliens at the top) uses its tractor beam, deliberately let it capture your ship—as long as you have a spare life. On your next turn, destroy that Boss Galaga while it is diving to rescue your captured fighter, combining them for double firepower.
  • Challenging Stages: Focus on memorizing the flight patterns during the bonus rounds. Destroying all 40 enemies in these stages grants a massive 10,000-point bonus, which is crucial for earning extra lives.
  • Watch the Borders: Enemies diving off the bottom of the screen will loop back to the top. Avoid trapping yourself in the extreme corners when formations are assembling.
