Game description:

First Samurai is a 1993 action-platformer for the Super Nintendo where you play as a lone swordsman seeking vengeance against the Demon King. What begins as a quest through feudal Japan eventually thrusts you forward in time into a futuristic setting. The game blends traditional side-scrolling combat with exploration, challenging you to gather magical energy, ring checkpoint bells, and survive sprawling levels.

How to play

Your objective is to navigate to the end of each stage while fighting off enemies and avoiding environmental hazards. If you take too much damage, you will lose your katana and must rely on hand-to-hand combat until you recover it. The Super Nintendo controls map the D-pad to the arrow keys for movement, Z and X for attack and jump, and Enter to pause.

Tips

  • Protect your sword: Your katana gives you superior range and damage. If you lose it, focus on defeating enemies to collect enough energy to summon it back.
  • Listen for the bells: Checkpoint bells are essential for surviving the large levels, but they require a portion of your magical energy to activate.
  • Explore for secrets: Strike suspicious-looking walls and explore off the beaten path to uncover hidden food for health and extra energy.
