Fantasy Zone Time Attack is a special arcade build of Sega’s 1986 horizontally-scrolling shooter Fantasy Zone, running here on System 16B hardware. This version began as a bonus mode built by M2 for the 2004 PlayStation 2 disc Sega Ages 2500 Series Vol. 33: Fantasy Zone Complete Collection, unlocked after clearing any System 16 release of the original once; its code was later pulled from that disc and adapted to run on real System 16B boards, giving the first Fantasy Zone a second life on hardware it was never originally released for. Underneath the different chassis it is the same game: you pilot Opa-Opa, a small sentient starfighter, through the worlds of the Fantasy Zone against an invading enemy force.
How to Play
Clear a stage by destroying all ten enemy generators scattered across it, which forces that stage’s boss to appear; beat the boss to move on. Destroyed enemies and bases drop coins, which you spend at in-stage shops â reached via a floating Shop balloon â on faster engines, stronger shots, and better bombs. Engine upgrades are permanent; weapon and bomb upgrades run out after a while. Since this is the Time Attack build, the clock is part of the challenge: the less time you spend chasing detours between generators and the shop, the better.
- Move: Arrow Keys (8-way)
- Shot: Z
- Bomb: X
- Start: Enter
- Coin: Shift
Tips
- Grab the first Shop balloon of a stage even if it costs a few seconds â a permanent engine upgrade pays for itself over the whole run.
- Save your bombs for boss weak points; they clear a boss far faster than chipping away with your default shot.
- Because the build is timed, prioritize destroying the ten generators over lingering for stray coins â that’s what ends the stage, not your score.
