Defender is a horizontal-scrolling shooter by Williams Electronics, released in 1980 on the Atari 2600. You pilot a lone spacecraft over a wraparound alien landscape, protecting a group of astronauts stranded on the surface below. Alien Landers descend to grab them; if a captive reaches the top of the screen uninterrupted, the Lander mutates into a Mutant — faster, more aggressive, and a permanent danger until destroyed. A scanner bar at the top of the screen maps the entire landscape at once, letting you spot abductions forming before they complete.
How to play
Survive as long as possible while keeping the astronauts alive. Kill Landers before they can grab anyone, or intercept them while they carry a captive. Mutants cannot be stopped once an abduction completes — only killed after the fact — so preventing captures is the priority. Two players can take turns or play simultaneously.

Tips
- Watch the scanner bar constantly — abductions happen off-screen all the time, and the scanner is your only early warning that an astronaut is being carried upward.
- If you shoot a Lander that has already grabbed an astronaut, the astronaut falls free. Fly underneath and catch them before they hit the ground for a score bonus.
- Prioritise any Lander carrying a captive over open-field targets — every Mutant that forms is a permanent escalation you cannot undo.
