Death Race is an unlicensed vehicular combat game released for the NES in 1991. Based on the controversial arcade classic, this title puts you behind the wheel of a modified muscle car in an open arena. Your objective is to chase down and run over fleeing targetsโoriginally intended to be monsters or “gremlins”โwhile avoiding the obstacles they leave behind.
How to play
The goal is to rack up points by running over the targets wandering the screen. Each time you hit one, a tombstone is left in its place. As the round progresses, the arena becomes a maze of tombstones that you must navigate without crashing. The default controls for this NES title in the browser are the arrow keys for steering, Z and X for accelerating and shifting (mapped to A and B), and Enter for Start.
Tips
- Carefully manage your speed. Going too fast makes it easy to accidentally crash into the growing number of tombstones or the arena walls.
- Use the tombstones to your advantage by trapping the remaining targets in narrow corridors, making them easier to run down.
