Dambusters is a horizontal scrolling shooter released in 1981 by South West Research (SWR) for the Arcade. Based on the historic WWII Operation Chastise, players take the stick of a Lancaster bomber from the RAF's 617 Squadron, tasked with flying over the English Channel and through Germany to drop a bouncing bomb on a heavily defended dam in the Ruhr valley.
How to Play
Use the Arrow Keys to control your bomber's altitude. Press Shift to insert coins and Enter to start. In the browser emulator, use Z, X, and C to fire your weapons, drop the bouncing bomb, and adjust your flight speed. You must survive the journey to the target area by managing fuel, avoiding mountains, and evading enemy aircraft and barrage balloons.
Gameplay Tips
- Watch the target lights under your bomber as you approach the dam; they will indicate when you are in range for the strike.
- For a successful hit, you must descend until the target beams touch the water and carefully judge your distance before releasing the bomb.
- Immediately after dropping your payload, pull up rapidly to avoid being caught in the resulting blast or crashing into the dam.
