Game description:

Developed by Hot-B around 1990, Cuby Bop is an unreleased prototype arcade game that puts a competitive spin on the classic ball-and-paddle genre. Running on Taito L System hardware, the title was only ever seen in location tests before its cancellation. Despite never seeing a full commercial release, it survives today as a fully playable piece of arcade history.

How to Play

The core gameplay resembles Breakout, but introduces simultaneous two-player competition. You use an 8-way joystick and two buttonsโ€”typically mapped to the arrow keys and action buttons in your browserโ€”to launch and volley a ball upwards to destroy blocks. The blocks are color-coded: player one can only break the blue blocks, while player two aims for the red ones. Hitting an opponent’s block won’t break it; instead, the ball will bounce right off, requiring you to carefully angle your shots.

Tips

  • Use your opponent’s blocks to your advantage by banking shots off them to reach difficult areas.
  • Since you cannot break the other player’s blocks, be prepared for sudden ricochets if you miss your own targets.
