Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams is a classic side-scrolling “cute ’em up” developed by Success and released for the Arcade by Sega in 1991. You play as the young, broom-riding witch Cotton, who is on an obsessive quest to eat her favorite magical candy, Willows. Accompanied by her fairy friend Silk, you’ll blast through fantastical, horror-themed stages filled with ghouls, ghosts, and mythical creatures in a highly stylized and vibrant world.
How to play
Navigate Cotton across the screen on her broom to dodge enemies and projectiles while shooting them down. You can pick up colored crystals dropped by defeated enemies; shooting the crystals changes their color, which determines the type of magical spells you collect. Standard Arcade controls apply in the browser: use the arrow keys to fly, and action keys (such as Z, X, or Space) to shoot and cast magic. Press Shift to insert a coin and Enter to start.
Tips
- Do not just collect crystals immediately. Shoot them to change their color (yellow, red, blue, or orange) to upgrade different elemental spells like fire or lightning.
- Holding down the fire button will charge up your magic attack, but remember that doing so consumes a spell from your inventory.
- Bombs hit the ground and travel along the terrain, making them perfect for clearing out ground-based enemies before they become a threat.
