Cosmic Avenger is a horizontally-scrolling shoot-’em-up released for the Arcade by Universal in July 1981. It came out shortly after Konami’s Scramble and Super Cobra kicked off the forced-scrolling shooter craze, and follows the same basic idea: pilot a fighter over hostile terrain, gunning down everything in your path. The game is also notable as the basis for one of the ColecoVision’s August 1982 launch titles, a port that ended up outselling and outliving the original coin-op.
How to Play
Your objective is to fly the Avenger fighter across three seamlessly-connected stretches of scrolling terrain, scoring points by destroying enemy spaceships, anti-aircraft missiles, tanks, and UFOs. A radar display warns you of threats approaching from off-screen, and wiping out an “X station” clears every visible enemy at once. Unlike many shooters of the era, there’s no fuel gauge to manage â it’s pure combat from start to finish. In your browser, standard arcade controls apply:
- Movement: Arrow keys
- Fire laser: Z
- Drop bomb: X
- Insert Coin: Shift
- Start: Enter
Tips
- Use both weapons: Lasers handle airborne threats like UFOs and missiles, while bombs are what you need to clear ground targets such as tanks â keep switching between them rather than leaning on one.
- Hunt the X stations: Since destroying one wipes every visible enemy off the screen, prioritize it when you’re being swarmed instead of trying to pick off each threat individually.
- Watch the radar: With no fuel to worry about, survival comes down to reacting to what’s incoming â check the radar regularly so nothing catches you off guard.
