Cool Spot is a 1993 platformer for the SNES where you play as the iconic sunglasses-wearing 7 Up mascot. Developed by Virgin Interactive with animation by David Perry’s team, this side-scroller stands out as one of the best promotional video games of the 16-bit era. You explore surprisingly detailed real-world environmentsโfrom beaches and boardwalks to toy roomsโcollecting Cool Points and shooting fizzing soda bubbles in eight directions to rescue your fellow Spots from their cages.
How to Play
Your main objective in each level is to collect enough Cool Points (the red 7 Up spots) to unlock the cage at the end of the stage and rescue another Spot. Collecting more points can also unlock bonus stages. The default SNES controls in the browser are:
- Arrow Keys: Move Spot or aim your shots in eight directions.
- Z / X: Jump / Fire soda bubbles.
- Enter: Start or pause the game.
Gameplay Tips
- Use diagonal shots: Spot can fire bubbles in all eight directions, and even shoot downward while jumping. Master diagonal shooting to deal with enemies safely from a distance.
- Hunt for hidden areas: Many levels have fake walls or paths leading off-screen. If a wall looks slightly different or if you see items suspended in hard-to-reach places, try exploring around the edges.
- Prioritize the clock: Time is often your biggest enemy, especially in later stages. Keep moving, but make sure to collect the stopwatch power-ups to extend your time limit.
