Comical Machine Gun Joe is an arcade-style shooting gallery action game developed by Sega and released exclusively in Japan for the Sega Master System (Mark III) in 1986. You play as Joe, a sharply dressed hero in a trench coat and fedora, tasked with taking down waves of cartoonish enemies across various stages. Known for its demanding difficulty and colorful presentation, the game requires you to clear out a set number of goons before facing off against a challenging boss at the end of each round.
How to Play
As a gallery shooter, Joe moves horizontally along the bottom of the screen while enemies attack from the playfield above. Use the Arrow keys to move side to side. Press Z to fire your machine gun and X to perform a high jump to dodge incoming projectiles (press Enter to start the game). Be careful when jumping, as Joe has a long, committed jump arc that leaves him vulnerable if timed poorly.
Tips for Survival
- Commit to your jumps: Because you cannot adjust your trajectory in mid-air, only jump when absolutely necessary to avoid taking damage.
- Stay in motion: Standing still makes you an easy target. Constantly strafe left and right to throw off enemy aim.
