Game description:

Chess88 is a straightforward chess simulator released for DOS by Don Berg in 1984. It provides a clean, no-frills environment to play classic chess against a computer opponent. As an early PC title, it focuses entirely on the core mechanics of the board game without any unnecessary distractions.

How to play

Chess88 follows standard chess rules. You enter your moves using standard algebraic notation by typing the starting square followed by the destination square (for example, typing E2E4 to move a pawn from E2 to E4). Press Enter to confirm your move, and the computer will calculate its response.

Tips

Because this is an early 1984 program, the computer’s depth of calculation is relatively basic compared to modern chess engines. Focus on solid fundamental principles, such as controlling the center and developing your pieces, as the AI tends to play direct, immediate tactical moves.
