Championship Lode Runner is a notoriously difficult action-puzzle platformer released for the Sega SG-1000 in 1979. Designed specifically for expert players who have already mastered the original game, it strips away the learning curve and immediately presents complex, grid-based levels where you must collect every piece of gold while outsmarting pursuing guards.
How to play
Your goal is to collect all the gold in each stage to reveal the ladder to the next level. You cannot jump; instead, your only defense is to dig temporary holes in the brick floors to trap guards or create pathways for yourself. Use the Arrow Keys to move and climb ladders, press Z to dig a hole to your left, and press X to dig to your right. Press Enter to start or reset.
Tips
- Guards trapped in holes will eventually climb out, and the hole will fill back in shortly after. If a guard drops gold when falling in, quickly run over them to grab it.
- You can safely walk across the heads of trapped guards. In many expert levels, this is the only way to cross wide gaps without falling.
- There is no time limit, so plan your route before making a move. Digging the wrong block or dropping into the wrong pit can permanently trap you, forcing a level restart.
