Developed by Hudson Soft and released for the NES in 1985, Challenger is an action-platformer where you take on the role of an archaeologist tasked with rescuing a princess from the villain Don Waldorado. The game is notable for mixing its gameplay styles, beginning with a fast-paced side-scrolling stage set entirely on a moving train before opening up into a top-down overworld where you must locate and explore caves to advance.
How to play
Your objective is to navigate through the diverse stages to save the princess. Use the arrow keys to move, the X key (A button) to jump, and the Z key (B button) to throw knives. Use Enter for Start and Shift for Select. In the side-scrolling sections, careful platforming is required to avoid enemies and hazards, while the overhead overworld focuses on exploration and multi-directional combat.
Tips
- During the opening train level, you can drop down into the train cars to bypass hazards on the roof, but be prepared to dodge enemies inside.
- Your throwing knife is your best defense; use it to dispatch enemies from a distance, which is particularly useful in the top-down overworld where threats approach from all directions.
