Buster Bros. is the North American arcade release of Mitchell Corporation’s Pang!, published by Capcom in 1989. Each single-screen stage is filled with bouncing balloons that split into two smaller balloons every time you pop one, and the goal is simple: clear every balloon on screen without letting one touch you. The round-the-world theme sends you through 50 stages set across 17 real cities and landmarks, and up to two players can play at once, with a second player free to join in at any time.
How to Play
Clear each screen of balloons before one of them bounces into you. Move left and right with the Arrow Keys, and press Z to fire your harpoon, which always shoots straight up rather than in the direction you’re aiming. Popped balloons split into two smaller, faster balloons that scatter apart, and only the smallest size disappears for good when hit. Power-ups occasionally drop from popped balloons, including a double or wide harpoon, a rapid-fire gun, dynamite, a shield, and a stop-time hourglass that freezes every balloon in place for a few seconds.
Tips
- Since a popped balloon splits into two, avoid firing straight up when you’re trapped underneath one with nowhere to dodge the pieces.
- Save the stop-time hourglass power-up for screens that are getting crowded â a few seconds of frozen balloons is often enough to clear a path.
- The harpoon only fires vertically, so lining yourself up before you shoot matters more than trying to aim.
