Developed by Electronic Arts in 1989, Budokan: The Martial Spirit is an early Sega Genesis fighting game that focuses on realism and discipline. Unlike the fast-paced, fantastical arcade fighters of the era, it requires players to master four distinct martial artsโKarate, Kendo (wooden sword), Nunchaku, and Bo (staff). You must first hone your techniques in individual dojos before traveling to Tokyo to compete against masters in the prestigious Nippon Budokan tournament.
How to play
Your objective is to defeat a series of increasingly difficult opponents at the Budokan tournament by carefully managing your attacks and defenses. Before entering the tournament, you can practice each of the four martial arts to learn their specific strengths and ranges.
In the browser, the Sega Genesis controls are mapped to your keyboard: move and jump using the Arrow Keys, and attack with S (A), X (B), and Z (C). Press Enter for Start and Shift for Mode. Combos and blocks require different directional inputs combined with the attack buttons.
Tips
Success relies heavily on managing your Stamina (Ki) meter. Every strike you throw drains your Ki, and attacking while exhausted will make your hits weak and ineffective. Back away and block to let your Ki regenerate before launching your next offensive. Additionally, pay attention to which martial art counters your opponent’s styleโfor example, the long reach of the Bo is excellent against close-quarters fighters.
