Bloody Roar is a classic 3D fighting game developed by Eighting and Raizing, released for the PlayStation in 1997. What sets this fighter apart from the crowd is its unique “Beast” mechanic. Each character is a Zoanthrope, a human capable of transforming into a powerful half-animal hybrid mid-battle. Triggering your beast form not only changes your appearance to creatures like a wolf, tiger, or rabbit, but also unlocks a devastating new moveset, increases your attack power, and regenerates a portion of your health.
How to play: The objective is to defeat your opponent in a best-of-three rounds format. As you fight, you build up a Beast gauge at the bottom of the screen. Once it has enough energy, you can transform into your animal form to gain the upper hand. The PlayStation controls are mapped to your keyboard: use the arrow keys to move, and Z, X, A, and S for your primary attacks and beast transformations. Press Enter to start the game.
Tips:
- Time your transformations: Do not shift into Beast form immediately. Wait until you have taken some damage, as transforming will recover a portion of your lost health.
- Rave mode: While in Beast form, you can trigger a high-speed “Rave” state, making your attacks significantly faster and harder to block, though it drains your Beast gauge quickly.
- Beast Drives: Each character has a signature, cinematic finishing move called a Beast Drive that deals massive damage but immediately reverts you to human form. Use it as a match-ending trump card.
