Developed by Konami and released for the PlayStation in 1998, BeatMania is the home port of the trailblazing arcade rhythm game that effectively launched the modern music game genre. Players step into the shoes of a club DJ, timing button presses and turntable scratches to a descending cascade of notes across a diverse tracklist of techno, house, and hip-hop. This Japanese release faithfully recreates the authentic arcade experience, proving that complex musical timing could translate beautifully to a home console.
How to Play
The objective is to accurately play the notes as they reach the judgment line at the bottom of the screen to keep your Groove Gauge in the safe zone. The original arcade cabinet featured five piano-like keys and a turntable. When playing with a standard PlayStation controller (mapped to your keyboard in the browser), the five keys are distributed across the D-pad and face buttons (Cross, Circle, Square, Triangle), while the shoulder buttons (L1/R1) typically handle the turntable scratches. Press Enter (Start) to begin and pause the game.
Tips
- Focus on the Groove Gauge: Your performance is judged entirely by the Groove Gauge at the end of the song. You must finish the track with the gauge above the required threshold to pass.
- Learn the turntable timing: Scratch notes (the red columns) can be tricky to coordinate with regular key presses. Practice the timing of the shoulder buttons independently if you keep breaking your combo on scratch-heavy sections.
- Utilize Practice Mode: If a song is giving you trouble, use the practice modes to slow down the chart or play without the gauge penalty to learn the complex patterns before trying to clear it for real.
