Originally released in Japan in 1997 by Konami, this classic Game Boy action-platformer is better known to Western players as Castlevania Legends. You control Sonia Belmont, the first female protagonist in the series, as she explores Dracula’s castle. Unlike traditional entries, this game replaces classic sub-weapons with a Soul Weapon system powered by magic points, and introduces a “Burning Mode” that grants temporary invincibility and enhanced power to help you survive the gruelling gauntlet of undead enemies.
How to Play
Navigate the castle’s branching pathways, defeat bosses to acquire new Soul Weapons, and ultimately confront Dracula. The controls use the standard Game Boy layout: use the D-pad (Arrow Keys) to move and crouch, press A (Z) to jump, and B (X) to attack with your whip. Press Select (Shift) to switch between acquired Soul Weapons, and use Up + B to activate them. To trigger the powerful Burning Mode, press A + B simultaneously.
Tips
- Conserve Burning Mode: You can only use Burning Mode once per stage or life. Save it for the boss fights or particularly overwhelming rooms to maximize its value.
- Hunt for hidden items: Attack walls and candles to find weapon upgrades, health-restoring meat, and magic point refills. Upgrading your whip early is crucial for dealing with tougher enemies.
- Master the Soul Weapons: Each boss you defeat grants a unique spell, such as wind or ice magic. Some enemies and bosses are highly susceptible to specific elements, so experiment with your arsenal if you get stuck.
