Mortal Kombat II for the Game Boy is a portable 1-on-1 fighting game released in 1994 by Probe Entertainment. Compressing the arcade smash hit into a handheld format, this version retains the signature brutal combat and digitized sprites while streamlining the roster to eight core fighters, including icons like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Liu Kang. Players battle through a grueling tournament in Outworld to survive the ladder and ultimately face the tyrannical emperor Shao Kahn.
How to play
Defeat your opponent by depleting their health bar in a best-of-three rounds match. Movement and jumping are controlled with the D-pad (mapped to the arrow keys in your browser). Attack using the A button (Z key) for kicks and the B button (X key) for punches. Use the Select button (Shift key) to block incoming attacks, and the Start button (Enter key) to pause. Special moves are performed by pressing a specific sequence of directions followed by an attack button.
Tips
- The AI enemies are aggressive but predictable when airborne. If an opponent jumps towards you, an uppercut (Down + Punch) is a highly reliable way to intercept and punish them.
- Because the Game Boy only has two attack buttons, fatalities and special moves use adapted, simplified inputs compared to the console and arcade versions.
- Sweeping the leg (Back + Kick) is an excellent tool for controlling space and keeping faster opponents at bay.
