800 Fathoms is a side-scrolling arcade shooter released in 1981, licensed in the United States by U.S. Billiards and known internationally as Mariner by Amenip. Playing similarly to classic horizontal shooters like Scramble, you pilot a submarine through perilous underwater caverns, battling enemy forces while carefully avoiding the hazardous ocean floor.
How to Play
Your objective is to survive five distinct, increasingly challenging levels, culminating in a boss submarine encounter at the end of each stage. In the browser, use the arrow keys to maneuver your submarine in eight directions, and press the Z and X keys to fire your torpedoes and missiles. Be careful not to make contact with enemies, their projectiles, or the cavern walls, as any collision will result in a lost life.
Tips
- Take advantage of your submarine’s maneuverability to safely traverse the later levels, which feature much tighter spaces and demanding layouts.
- Focus on clearing a path with your weapons rather than just dodging, as destroying enemies gives you the necessary room to avoid the jagged underwater terrain.
