Released for DOS in 1991 by the Bitmap Brothers, Gods is a deliberate, puzzle-focused action-platformer. You play as Hercules on a quest for immortality, battling through ancient Greek-inspired ruins. Unlike typical run-and-gun games of the era, the pacing is methodical, and it is famous for its adaptive enemy AI that reacts to how well you play, attempting to steal power-ups or flank your position.
How to play
Your goal is to reach the end of each level while solving switch puzzles, finding keys, and managing your inventory. The DOS controls carry over directly to your keyboard: use the arrow keys to move, duck, and climb, with typical action keys like Space, Alt, or Ctrl to jump and attack. You can press Right Alt + Enter at any time to play in fullscreen.
Tips
- Explore carefully for hidden rooms; the game tracks your progress and will spawn helpful rewards, like health or extra weapons, if you meet certain hidden criteria.
- Don’t rush forward blindly. Because enemies can adapt to your movement, it is often better to let them come to you or use the environment to funnel them into your attacks.
