Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a 1994 Sega Genesis platformer developed by Sonic Team and published by SEGA. The story picks up immediately after Sonic 2 â Sonic and Tails land on Angel Island only to have Knuckles the Echidna punch Sonic out of Super form and steal the Chaos Emeralds. The game spans six zones and introduces three elemental shields that each unlock a distinct mid-air ability.
How to Play
Race through two acts per zone, keep at least one ring to survive hits, and defeat the boss at the end of Act 2. Giant gold rings hidden throughout the levels warp you to Blue Sphere special stages; clear each one’s gem pattern to earn a Chaos Emerald toward Super Sonic form.
Each elemental shield found in item boxes has a special move: the Flame Shield lets Sonic dash forward in the air, the Bubble Shield bounces him off the floor, and the Thunder Shield gives him a double-jump. Without any shield, tapping jump again mid-air activates the Insta-Shield â a split-second hitbox expansion that can reach enemies otherwise too protected to spin-jump normally.
Controls
| Gamepad | Keyboard | Action |
|---|---|---|
| D-Pad | Arrow keys | Move / crouch / look up |
| A / B / C | S / X / Z | Jump (all three buttons jump by default) |
| Start | Enter | Pause |
Tips
- Look for giant shimmering gold rings before you hit the end-of-act signpost â they open Blue Sphere special stages where Chaos Emeralds are awarded.
- Ice Cap Zone Act 1 opens with a snowboard sequence: hold right and jump over gaps to grab rings before normal platforming begins.
- The Thunder Shield’s double-jump is the most flexible of the three elemental powers â it clears wide gaps and reaches item boxes the other two shields cannot.
